Although we might think the sun is the only
renewable source of energy this is not
entirely true. Energy is also available in
the heat of the earth’s core that at times
may be the cause of earthquakes and volcanic
activity. The energy that the earth’s core
provides is called Geothermal Energy.
Geothermal Energy has been used since the
Roman times as a source of heat by utilizing
hot water and steam that is produced by the
earth’s core. Geothermal literally means
heat that comes from within the Earth.
Using the core’s energy through a geothermal
heat pump, it heats up buildings without the
need to transport and burn biomass on site.
Geothermal Heat Pumps have a very
straightforward procedure and do not require
high knowledge of technology. The heat
pumps not only produce but transfer heat as
opposed to a furnace or boiler.
The heating and cooling using geothermal
energy uses the earth’s ability to store
heat in the ground and in the water thermal
masses. The thermal mass holds and stores
the heat for when needed. This allows for
you to have climate control for when the
atmosphere has cooled down. With a
water-source heat pump using the available
heat in the winter and putting it back in
the ground in the summer.
Geothermal Heating and Cooling compared to
ordinary systems can save you up to 35%-70%
of your monthly energy bills. Although it
does cost more to install the geothermal
heat pump the saving on the long run is
money well spent.
To install the geothermal heating pump it
requires a loop field. A loop field is a
series of looped tubes that vary from size.
Installing the loop field requires digging
up a hole about 75-300 feet deep. The
bigger the structure the bigger the length
and capacity of the components. The liquid
in the loops could be in direct contact or
indirect contact with the heat source.
The
liquid pump pack is what sends the water
through the loop field and through the water
source heat pump. The heat pump replaces
the furnace or boiler to heat the water.
Then the heat from the loop field is
transferred through the pump to produce heat
for the property.
The Geothermal Heat pump is environmentally
friendly and a new source of energy.
Allowing it to become one of the most
efficient heating and cooling systems
available for our times.
